Allan Savory: How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change
Bare land will be colder in the morning and hotter at midday than land covered with detritus material.
Desertification is often blamed on animals over grazing.
Resting land has been the go-to solution, but it is shown over and over to not work.
Herd animals stay in packs for safety. Constantly moving to find new food. Trample vegetation and move on. W/o animals the grasses/etc don't break down before the next rainy season. This is called oxidation, a slow process, smothers and kills grasses, Lets woody vegetation take hold. [Islands of fertility]
Used to treat this dry oxidized grass by burning, but that still eaves land bear.
Put packs of animals, tight, on land. Keep them moving. Mimic old giant herds. Once they eat the grass and move on, the grass is trampled and mixed with urine and dung. Increased pack size of animals 400%.
Patagonia. Constant degradation as sheep herds have been reduced. Add 25K sheep in one herd (really mimicing nature), 50% increase in first year.
Working on 15 million hectares on 5 continents.
Very low cost, just animals.
Place to store carbon. Do it on 1/2 the desert will bring CO2 in atmosphere to per-industrial levels.
No additional feed required, only on mine reclamation is very bare and needs added feed,
